# Self-custody

> How trading on Calibri works when the money never leaves your own on-chain Gnosis Safe.

Calibri is **fully non-custodial**. Your USDC sits in **your own Gnosis Safe**
on-chain — owned by your keys, never ours — and Calibri has no ability to move it, with
one narrow exception: the bridge module can move USDC you sent to your address on another
supported network, and only to your own Safe on Polygon. See
[Deposits from other networks](/non-custodial/deposits-from-other-networks). You authorise every
trade by signing; the operator relays the signed order and pays the gas.

The practical consequence: your funds are **withdrawable even if Calibri is
offline**, because withdrawal is a transaction against your own Safe, not a
request to a company.

<Note>
  Two setups lead to the same Safe — a **passkey** (Face ID / Touch ID) or a **wallet you already use** (MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet, Rainbow, WalletConnect). They differ only in what owns the Safe. See [Your wallet options](/non-custodial/wallets).
</Note>

## How it works, end to end

| Stage | What happens |
| - | - |
| **Funds** | USDC lives in your own Gnosis Safe on-chain — 1-of-1, or 1-of-2 if you add a [signing key](/non-custodial/signing-keys) |
| **Balances** | `balance_safe` / `locked_safe` mirror your Safe — see [Balances](/non-custodial/balances) |
| **Placing orders** | EIP-712-signed order via `POST /api/v2/atlas/account/orders`; atlas validates the signature and relays it. See [Signed orders](/non-custodial/signed-orders) |
| **Order collateral** | Locks your `locked_safe` pool (the mirror of on-chain Safe USDC) |
| **Contracts** | A YES buyer matched with a NO buyer; the leg carries a `settlement_status` badge tracking the on-chain mint |
| **Settlement** | On-chain: a complete set of outcome tokens is minted from Safe collateral |
| **Winnings** | **Not** auto-paid — you call `redeemPositions` yourself (relayed, gasless), USDC lands in your Safe, then you withdraw. See [Redeeming winnings](/non-custodial/redeeming-winnings) |
| **Fees** | Taker fee charged **once at trade**, pulled on-chain from your Safe after the match |
| **Gas** | None **for you** — the operator relays every Safe transaction (deploy, approvals, settlement, redeem) and pays the gas. You only ever sign |

## You only ever sign

Signing is the whole of your involvement in the on-chain machinery. You never
need to hold a gas token, approve a network fee, or send a transaction yourself:

* **Deploying** your Safe and signer contracts — operator pays, on first deposit
* **Approvals** that let the exchange settle your trades — operator relays
* **Settlement** of a matched order — operator relays
* **Redeeming** a winning position — operator relays

What the operator *cannot* do is move your funds without a signature from you. The one
exception is the bridge module, which can only carry USDC sent to your address on another
supported network to your own Safe on Polygon — see
[Deposits from other networks](/non-custodial/deposits-from-other-networks).

## No fee at settlement

<Warning>
  Winning shares redeem for the **full 1.00 USDC each** — there is **no fee at settlement or redemption**. The platform fee is charged **once, at trade time** (the taker fee). Any older wording that says winners redeem "1.00 minus a settlement fee" is incorrect.
</Warning>

## What you are responsible for

Self-custody cuts both ways. Because only you can move your funds:

* **Nobody can recover your wallet for you.** Calibri holds no key and no
  backup. Keep your passkey synced to a keychain, or your wallet's recovery
  phrase safe — and consider adding a
  [signing key](/non-custodial/signing-keys), a second key of your own that can
  still reach the funds if the first one is lost.
* **Winnings are claimed, not delivered.** A resolved market makes your winning
  token redeemable; it does not push funds to you. See
  [Redeeming winnings](/non-custodial/redeeming-winnings).

## Next steps

* [Your wallet options](/non-custodial/wallets) — passkey or your own wallet
* [Balances](/non-custodial/balances) — how `balance_safe` / `locked_safe` work
* [The Safe](/non-custodial/the-safe) — deploy, fund, and make your Safe trade-ready
* [Signed orders](/non-custodial/signed-orders) — build and sign an EIP-712 order
* [Redeeming winnings](/non-custodial/redeeming-winnings) — claim on-chain payouts and withdraw
